4th of July one year later

This weekend one year ago I started building my little terrace garden.... no one was around and the time was right so my garden was started. and maybe if I was lucky I would get something to grow. Well lets just call last year my learning year I had a nice little harvest that was good for for one meal. But that was last year...

but lets move on to March of 2009 when I planted my new little garden with tomatoes, pumpkins, artist gourds, garlic, spearmint, yellow squash and zucchini. I hoped that maybe one or two would take...but I had no idea of what was about to happen.... this year was going to be a little different than last

I was very excite when by May 31 the first two bins of my garden were really starting to finally starting to grow...I even planted a few more tomatoes plants from Howard Gertz in in the third bin and everything was good.

but then things started to change I should say grow and on June 11 I noticed that the pumpkin and gourds were starting to creep into the next bin and you could see the growth every 12 hours... and then the tomatoes also started to grow

on June 12th I went up to Davis to help Sam move back back home for the summer.

we were back home by June 14

I found that there was a pumpkin and the tomatoes were starting to ripen

but then I also realized how big the pumpkin plan was starting to get.

by June 18th the plants were growing into the third bin and we jokingly started to call the plants Audrey 2.

on June 20th Barry and I left for New York and Audrey was just growing up the wall of the third bin

but 3 days later when we got home Audrey had already gone up and over the wall and was creeping into the third bin

we were home for 2 days only to leave on June 26th for San Francisco for a long weekend

but the fact that I was not home didn't stop Audrey from taking over

So when we left Audrey has started over into the third bin

but when we came home

we found that Audrey had taken over and was moving into the fourth bin. I don't know when she will stop but I am not sure how safe it is for Shomer to go with me when I water.

well I will update this as the summer goes on.

The first harvest

I was wondering if I would know when it was time to pick my veggies.... but I guess the plants and Mother Nature know best.... and they told me it was time to harvest ....
basically by dying....

The sad part for me is that my little pumpkin plant
the plant that started it all...

grew and grew and grew

it even flowered
but I never got a pumpkin
has also died....
but we had some tomatoes and the squash for dinner tonight with some wine and lamb chops and they were good....
so now I guess I need to start planing for next year.

my little terrace garden cont.

oh how my garden grows...
every morning you turn on the hose and you don't really pay attention
and then all of a sudden you look and wow! how it's grown

little sprigs of green popping through the ground

has now taken over the whole planter box...

and the little yellow flowers that I was so excited about

have bloomed into yellow squash....
almost as big as what we buy in the market.

and my tomatoes....
these two little plants that have been sitting there
and all of a sudden they started growing and then there were the little yellow blooms.....
and then little green teardrop tomatoes and finally
they are turning RED!!!!!!!!!!

How does my garden grow EN23

Remember way back on the 4th of July when I started my little terrace garden??  I do.... my toe still hurts... but I got it finished and over time I even got a little pumpkin plant in the ground
for a long time these little plants were
very lonely in the planter by them selves  but over time I added a
few tomato plants and a cucumber plant and some herbs.... I even planted a few more seeds... some yellow summer squash (Barry's favorite) and some lettuce and some artists gourds.
I was very surprised when after after a few weeks when they started to sprout....  I know
your thinking "Isn't that what they are suppose to do?" and the answer is yes.. however my thumb has never been known to be that green.   But they are growing ....

And look at how big they are getting

My Terrace Garden

I have been talking about this (having a garden mostly growing some pumpkins) and measuring and planning for probably 6 years now....

after Indy and Anna Jones had torn up the side yard it seemed like the perfect place. There was mid day and afternoon sunshine and there was room for pumpkins... it would just take a little planning.

O.k. planning and a little uninterrupted time......

which I got this 4th of July weekend.

Shomer made sure that everyone left me alone.

So at the end of the 1st day there was not much done... but I started late and I was only working until about 12:00 but it was started and they say that all great journeys start with just one step... in my case it was with just one bin.

I started a little earlier the next day... but I had a flow figured out and knew what the process was..... I also had a few more helpers Barry did come out with Shomer to see what I had done... but we all know what happens when we mix Barry, Tools and Me....
No ... Barry didn't have anything to do with it.... I stubbed my toe. My number 1 helper on Saturday and Sunday was Bubbie.... she missed the chance to build things... so she helped my and I brought back memories....

So at the end of day 2 I had a lot done and was ready to finish up on Sunday.

All I need now is dirt..... Next weekend..... a little drip irrigation and some seeds.
I am looking forward to having veggies from my own garden.
